Short intro to the geodata catalogue

This geodata catalogue will give you an overview about known geographic datasets in European countries.

Data resources may be available in different formats such as Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) webservices, ESRI Shapefile®, CAD formats, CSV, MS Excel® or other. Some resources link to websites that require further research.

For the most relevant insights into available datasets, we will focus on OGC Web Map Service (WMS) format in this description. An OGC WMS is a standardised webservice which makes geographic data available via a simple request to a remote server.

Language capabilities

The platform offers datasets in various languages. Switching the search language enhances the displayed results, as it will give entries in the search language a higher relevance to be returned. The default language is the same as your browsers default language.

Now go to the search interface and find the search text field. Left of it you find a dropdown box containing different language shortcuts. Choosing one of the options will change the language in which the catalogue is searched.

For this tutorial we will switch the search language to English ('EN'), if not already chosen.

Selecting a relevant dataset

Type a keyword into the search field, e.g. 'elevation' if you are looking for terrain heights related datasets.

There will probably appear a dataset with the name 'Elevation WMS of the Earth Observation Center (EOC), DLR'. It is attributed with the Type 'service' and the Service type 'view'. This should tell us that this resource is a View service, which in most cases is a WMS. In this respect exactly, what we are looking for.

Information about the dataset

You see different symbols, just below the dataset title. Those are:

information sign  With a mouse over or a click on the icon you can view the description of the dataset.

clock symbol  This icon gives you information about the date when the resource metadata was created or updated by the original provider.

user symbol  This icon shows details about the provider of the resource often including a contact person and how to get in touch with them.

key symbol  Shows licence information and legal constraints that must be taken care of when using this dataset.

link symbol  This icon shows you the online resource(s), where this dataset or further details about it is available.

map symbol  This button allows you to add the resource to the map. This works for datasets, that are available as an open WMS service. Click on the symbol to review available layers at the resource. For all other data formats such as usual html pages or files, you will currently receive an error message. The message will also indicate, when a service requires a login.

star symbol  The empty star icon shows, that this dataset can be bookmarked. In that way you can create a list of your favourite datasets to find them easier the next time you need them. To use this function, you will need to register.

Adding the dataset to the map

Ok, now we want to see, what content is actually available in our dataset. When clicking on the map icon, you will see a popup containing different layers, which are provided by this service.

Choose one, e.g. 'SRTM X-SAR Elevation Mosaic' in this case, to load it to the map. The map will show you the extent of the loaded layer with the new content drawn over the basemap.

We are very happy if you use the platform to find available geospatial datasets in Europe. Please be aware, that this platform offers a preview function only and is not intended to carry out your GIS tasks. Usage of external services should be kept to a reasonable amount.

When working with datasets from third party providers, you must make sure, your usage complies with the legal terms and conditions set up by the data provider.

About the catalogue

Often, existing resources of geodata are hard to localise, because every provider of geodata distributes on his own. This means, there is no uniform place to search for geodata and results in high and cost-intensive efforts for GIS-Analysts.

Our geodata catalogue aims at providing a webbased platform that enables searching for local infrastructural geodata as well as environmental, natural hazards, geo-risk or public security related datasets in Europe. We seek to create a resource, where a comprehensive volume of geodata can be found, to achieve better reusability of existing geodata. Our goal is to provide this resource with a content, that will allow ad-hoc integration of webservices into GIS systems for many of the datasets.

The catalogue currently contains several ten thousands of datasets at European coverage and is constantly growing. The catalogue holds the metadata known from many open geodata sources as well as proprietary providers. You will find information about available datasets, their data format and geographic extent as given by the data provider.

The catalogue is currently available as a web interface and as API, which can be integrated into any GIS or other software. If you like to get access to the full metadata available for each dataset, you can get the API or ask your GIS provider to integrate it.

The information in the catalogue is provided to our best knowledge and shows the metadata we get from the data providers. Narimo systems is not liable for incorrect or incomplete content of any of the datasets.

Metadata integration into external applications

Our API can enable you to directly integrate the geodata catalogue into your GIS-system, so it adapts to your customers workflow and look-and-feel. Your customers will be able to search all datasets directly inside their UI and evaluate the metadata, supplied by the catalogue. Within the metadata, you will find detailed information about the dataset.

Datasets that are open and specified with a service url, e.g. to a WMS, might be directly integrated into your GIS-system, if it supports OGC WMS specification. Otherwise, your users can contact the dataset provider by the specified contact details, to discuss licensing or access to the data.
